2015 Proposed calendar for Coastlands Netball Kapiti
These are proposed dates and are NOT confirmed however my goal is to keep all our netball families as up to date as possible. I will add and adjust as necessary. To date, I have not received any umpiring dates/information.
Please contact l.cameron@waikanae.school.nz if you can assist with the 2015 season. I will be requiring 'Star Helpers' for the junior netball which takes place on Wednesday afternoons and Primary level coaches/managers and umpires which will train at least once a week and play on Saturdays at Te Ati Awa courts, Paraparaumu. Thank you very much!!!
Years 1-3 = Junior netball which is non-competitive and teaches skills and drills to develop knowledge in netball.
Year 4 = Future Fern netball. This will be the last year group to complete a season of future ferns as the concept is being fazed out by Netball New Zealand. Full court, position rotations.
Year 5-8 = Primary netball. Competition grades. Full court, no rotations.

Parking on Saturdays - A message from KCDC
It has been identified that vehicles associated with both junior rugby and netball are parking on the footpaths of nearby streets. Please note that this is not permitted by the Kāpiti Coast District Council. By parking on the footpath, it puts others at risk. Children could get hit if forced on to the road, wheelchairs and pushchairs can’t get past and vision impaired people could injure themselves. We are aware that parking in this area is not ideal on a Saturday morning but we would encourage our families to park further down the street and take and extra few minutes to walk. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Basic protocols for Umpires
Basic Protocols:
- Umpires acknowledge each other before the game.
- Umpires check both teams for Nails, Jewellery/Adornments and Uniform.
- Umpires ask ONE spectator to be the Official Score Keeper for the entire game.
- Umpires encourage teams to do their own Toss and then inform the Umpires of the result i.e. who has the Centre pass and which way teams will be going.
- Umpires ask each team for their Match Ball and then decide which ball will be used for the duration of the game.
- Umpires “Toss” to determine which side they will have and who the Walking Umpire will be before the game. Whoever wins the Toss takes the Northern side of the court.
- Umpires stand together on the side line (either side) before the game.
- At the 30 second call from the Control Room, if neither team or only one team are on court the non-walking umpire blows their whistle to alert the team/s that they need to be on court.
- The Walking Umpire crosses the court, mid-court, and releases the ball at Centre circle just before the start of play.
- The Controlling Umpire (the play is going their way) starts the game on the hooter.
- At the end of each quarter both Umpires meet “mid-court” at the end of each quarter, confirm they have the correct next Centre pass and walk off the court together and confirm the Centre pass with the Score Keeper. If the Umpires and Score Keeper disagree, the Umpires are the ones who MUST change their Centre pass to match the Scorecard.

Kapiti Sportsperson of the Year Awards
Last night I attended the 'Sportsperson of the Year' awards at Southwards Theatre. The calibre of athletes was amazing. I got to see many past pupils doing well in their sporting codes and beamed with pride at their achievements. I represented netball as 'official of the year' and even though I didn't win my category, Te Huinga Selby Rickit won her category and was named Sportswoman of the Year. Te Huinga is an amazing defender for the Central Pulse and Silver Ferns! Here is a photo of the netball representatives at the award ceremony. Note how I stole Te Huinga's trophy off her... he he he he he

Irene van Dyk visits Waikanae School
We had the pleasure of hosting a visit from Irene van Dyk - an iconic netballer and (in my opinion" the best Goal Shooter EVER!!! The children that attended all received loads of skills and drills which was fabulous. Irene shared some snippets of her netball career and how she started playing netball. She even told us that she wasn't always so tall. When she turned 16, she grew 20cm in 2 years!!!!
Thank you to everyone that turned up. I hope everyone got a lot out of Irene's visit.
ALSO
A massive thank you to Marilyn Wright who has doubled her offer for our school. She is prepared to donate $1000 to Waikanae School for every referral that ends in a listing for Tall Poppy. That means 5 referrals and we get our uniforms!!! Wahoooo!!!!! Without Marlilyn, Irene would never have come.
Marilyn can be contacted on 021 710878
If anyone else has any photos, please email them to me and I will upload them onto our blog.
Pretty stoked to have met one of my idols. |

The Haier Pulse have agreed terms with the world’s most capped international player, Irene van Dyk, as they continue to build their squad for the 2014 ANZ Championship.
With Robyn Broughton confirmed as head coach for a third year at the helm, the acquisition of van Dyk, a 2012 grand final winner with the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic, is another key step towards the franchise’s goal of a top-four finish and ultimately a championship.
The Silver Ferns shooter, who won gold medals at the 2006 and 2010 Commonwealth Games and also at the 2003 World Championship, was the most accurate shooter in this year’s trans-Tasman competition, scoring 425 goals from 445 attempts for a 95.5% success rate.
Van Dyk, who lives in Wellington, has commuted to Hamilton to train and play for the past 11 years, since moving from the Capital Shakers at the end of the 2002 season. The former New Zealand Sportswoman of the Year is looking forward to spending more time at home with her family as she links up with her local team.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time playing for the Magic, which has been very special, but I’m really looking forward to a fresh challenge with the Haier Pulse as I look to build my future closer to home,” said van Dyk.
Ian Collier, Chairman of Netball Central Zone and the Haier Pulse, was thrilled to welcome one of the world’s highest profile players to the franchise, whilst paying tribute to the departing Caitlin Thwaites. “The Central Zone board is delighted that we have been able to accommodate Irene van Dyk's desire to be closer to her family at this stage of her career. The entire Central Zone netball community will benefit and we look forward to welcoming her back to her home town.
“With the return of Irene, we also recognise that we owe a huge thanks to Caitlin Thwaites who has been very understanding of the impact that this news has had on her own position with the Haier Pulse team.
“Caitlin has been an integral member of the team as they have continued to improve under the guidance of Robyn Broughton. We are incredibly thankful for the contribution that Caitlin has made in this respect. We wish her the very best with the Australian Diamonds and have no doubt that she will continue to excel as an ANZ Championship player.”

Grading Days - Season structure
Each grading day will consist of a "tournament" style of grading with teams playing 4 x 20 minute games over the course of their grading day. Other changes include an initial 7 week round robin followed by a 5 week round robin culminating in a semi final, a preliminary final and a grand final for each grade, a structure which provides a second life at finals time for the two top teams in each grade (think ANZ Champs final structure).

Primary start date change
Hi there families,
The Netball Kapiti Board have met and have indicated that Primary Schools will begin their netball season on Saturday 10th May.
Initially all teams were going to start on the 3rd May however it has been decided that Club and College will begin on the 3rd for their grading and Primary will start their grading the following week.
I'm sure this will suit everybody much better.
Grading day will consists of several short 20min games. It will be run similar to a tournament system.
Feedback to the board last year indicated the grading system needed to change and so this strategy has been adopted for this season. Getting teams into the correct grade for the season is crucial.
